É freguente afirmar-se ter a sua origem há milhares de anos em corpulentos cães do vasto planalto tibetano.É corrente dizer-se que esse poderosos molossos terão migrado lentamente para Ocidente, atingindo a Ásia Menor. Diz-se ainda terem passado através dos Balcãs, seguindo as legiões romanas do Mar Negro ao Atlantico.

Em tão vasta área, mercê de selecção natural ao longo dos séculos, form adquirindo características proprias, que posteriormente os defeniram de região para região.

Na Peninsula Ibérica, tribos cuja susistência se baseava na exploração de gado por certo conferiram a estes câes grande força e curpulência papel impar dos guardiões contra tribos rivais e depredadores de rebanhos.

They are often claimed to be descended from huge dogs on the vast Tibetan highlands, thousands of years ago. These powerful mastiffs are commonly said to have migrated slowly westwards into Asia Minor. They are thought to have crossed the Balkans, following the Roman legions from the Black Sea to the shores of the Atlantic.

Over so vast an area and through centuries of natural selection, they acquired characteristics of their own, which eventually differentiated them from region to region.
